Electricity Exportation To Nigeria — Esrondom Engineering Services

Ghana is looking to expand its electricity exports to Nigeria, as the country works toward becoming a major energy hub for West Africa.
Energy and Green Transition Minister John Abdulai Jinapor said Ghana wants to develop sufficient generation and transmission capacity to meet domestic needs while supplying neighbouring economies. Ghana already exports electricity to Togo, Benin, Côte d'Ivoire and Burkina Faso through regional power connections.
Nigeria, with a population exceeding 200 million, represents a potentially significant new market for Ghanaian electricity. However, Jinapor acknowledged that additional transmission infrastructure would be required to support power exports at the necessary scale. The plan forms part of Ghana's broader ambition to strengthen regional energy integration while positioning itself as a reliable electricity supplier across West Africa.
At home, Ghana is pursuing a diversified energy strategy combining natural gas, renewable energy and nuclear power to provide reliable electricity for President John Dramani Mahama's 24-Hour Economy initiative. Jinapor argues that dependable power will be essential for businesses and industries operating for longer hours, while stronger generation capacity could simultaneously allow Ghana to expand electricity exports across the region.
